What is aquathermy?

Aquathermy is a smart and sustainable way of extracting heat from water. It is potentially a clean and efficient solution to much of our heat demand. The technology reduces our carbon footprint and ensures that our energy is generated and used locally. That means: less dependence on fossil fuels, no landscape pollution and a future-proof heat source for all.

How does it work?

Surface water in lakes, canals and the sea forms a kind of big jar: every day it warms up during the day. By capturing this heat with heat exchangers, we can use it to give our heating water the first push. We heat the water a few degrees, and the final step can be done electrically or in other sustainable ways, for example. This provides significant savings in energy consumption.

In winter and summer

In summer, of course, the water gets even warmer, and not much heating is needed. This heat can be stored in underground reservoirs, creating a storage of hot and cold water. Ultimately, the system thus builds up a buffer that can then be put to optimal use in winter and summer.

Lots of water means lots of energy

With our province's surface water, as much as 35% of total heat demand can theoretically be met. This heat is generated and used locally, which is not only efficient but also prevents landscape pollution.
